What’s the #1 mistake job-seekers make?
Drumroll please… 🥁
Hands-down, it has to be: NOT understanding their audience.
Exhibit A: When we job-seekers work on our resumes, we often think of them as term papers. Every single sentence has to be perfect, every single bullet – even our Hobbies at the end of the second page – has to be carefully constructed.
And yet…
When an actual recruiter reads our resumes, they do so in just 6 SECONDS – on average. Both because they’re time-starved (the average recruiter has 30-40 roles to fill and 250 resumes to review per role) and because they’re looking for an overall impression – do you feel like a rockstar Product Manager or Accountant? Or are you just Confused or Meh???
So the #1 way to break through this disconnect is to put yourself (or better yet, a trusted friend) in the recruiter’s seat.
Instead of reading each bullet separately (which no recruiter will ever do), what’s the OVERALL impression?
-> Are you clearly focused on this SPECIFIC role?
-> Do you have a track record of MASSIVE success?
-> Will presenting your resume to the hiring manager get me PROMOTED or FIRED?
That’s how we break through the looking glass and speak directly to our most important audience! ⚡️
