Job Summary

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.

Our Michigan Medicine Security Services department seeks to fill several Security Officer positions. As a Michigan Medicine Security Officer, you will report to a Security Sergeant.

Responsibilities*

  • Ensure public safety, protect our assets, and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire, and security agencies; act calmly in emergencies and use emergency equipment
  • Working with medical staff, de-escalate potentially violent and non-violent situations; help maneuver persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious; restrain individuals as needed
  • Patrol the medical center and off-site health system buildings and monitor fire, infant protection, security, and access control alarm systems
  • Detect safety hazards and criminal elements
  • Use your customer service skills and inclusive mindset to respectfully communicate and work with all community members
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters
  • Prepare incident and security reports
  • Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of the routine patrol
  • Provide services such as escorts, wayfinding, unlocks, motorist assists, well-being checks, fund transports, property control, and traffic and crowd control
  • Move equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishers

Required Qualifications*

  • High school or GED equivalent and one (1) year of experience in a security, fire, military, customer service or emergency management field
  • Experience with the enforcement of fire, safety and security practices
  • Skillset in handling emergency situations and using associated equipment
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and basic keyboarding
  • A valid driver’s license and a driving record with less than 6 points
  • You must pass a comprehensive public safety background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination

Modes of Work

These positions will work onsite patrolling the medical center and offsite health system buildings.

Additional Information

All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report any Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees must also complete the Clery Compliance training within 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union which contains and settles all matters concerning wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Pay Range Information

The pay range for new Security Officers is $44,491.20-$55,640.00.
