When back in the office, Shannon is editing her own content and planning and prepping the next assignment. One of the biggest things that will give interested students a leg up is being able to write well. Shannon tells us, “You can teach someone to edit but you can’t teach someone to write.”

What I love most about the work that we do is the direct impact that you can have on people's lives. Generally, when we come into contact with people who are victims of a crime, it's one of the most significant things that ever happened in their life. For us it's just a file and a piece of paper, but then once you start to get more into the case and you meet the victims and you really understand where they're coming from, you recognize how important what you're doing, how important it is and how it affects their lives directly. When I was supervising the drug unit I would have 250 to 300 open cases at a time that I was responsible for supervising, as well as I had four or five other assistant district attorneys underneath me who had the same number of cases. We don't have to do what clients want us to do, because we represent the Commonwealth. We represent all of the people of Montgomery County, so we get to choose what we think is right based on the situation and the facts that we're presented with, and so it takes a strong moral compass, but it does take a lot of hard work in keeping on top of all of those files. Keeping everything in order, communicating with all the people that you need to with your police officers, with your victims, with the judge with the defense attorney, so there is significant work load there.
