Wyatt is a Project Manager with Knutson Construction, a mid-size construction company that specializes in both concrete structures as well as hospital and research facility cleanrooms. Although Wyatt handles many of the company’s coordination logistics, he tells us his biggest responsibilities are scheduling and procurement; ensuring the correct items show up on time so as not to throw the entire schedule out of whack.

My names Wyatt Irwin, I'm a project engineer with Knutson Construction here in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We specialize in self-perform work, like concrete masonry that sort of thing. So we do a lot of parking ramps, CMU structure that sort of building, as well as hospital and clean room type facilities. Well, it's kind of a big hat to wear, we do a lot of work between sub-contractors and architects, and it's a lot of small things that people outside the industry, you know, wouldn't even know occur for say some middles and RFI's. It's a lot of checking of information, coordination of tasks, scheduling's a big part of it. My responsibility right now is procurement, so making sure all the items necessary to build they show up on time and are the right item. So if we get the wrong thing out in a day, you know, it could delay that task one day, but since that task didn't happen that day it puts the whole schedule out of wack. Right now I'm working at the University of Minnesota Shepherd laboratories. It's a two story renovation where we're completely gutting out the old labs and bringing in a new layout and basically a whole new building for these two stories. It's roughly, I'd say, nine million dollars worth of work over the course of 11 months. And a big challenge on this one is the building is still occupied, and it's occupied with, you know, research. So it's not like we can just knock on the door and say hey we have to come in today and do this it's all planned ahead when they're moving out, when their experiments are done. So it's really working around the user to get the facility ready for them. Most days I am on location, just because I like to go in and talk to the guys, see how they're doin'. It's kind of a personal preference for me. I could work from our main office, or even home if I chose to but I like goin' on site, you know, get the feel for the day, see how everyone's doin', it's a lot more personal that way. Working hours typically I show up anywhere between seven and eight, really depends on what meetings I have in the morning. Like, today for example I had a nine o'clock owners meeting, well, of course, then I wanna be in at seven to prep for the meeting, but typical day seven thirty to eight and then probably leave four thirty, four o'clock on a good day.
